Produce Community

Just wanted growers to be aware that the US House is proposing cutting the Cooperative Extension budget down to 1994 levels.

This would decimate the Extension Service that so may of us have gained from in our operations.

It could also spell the end to the 4-H program.

These cuts are very disproportionate to cuts in other agricultural programs.

If there was ever a time to contact your congress people this is it!

We made our last mortgage payment in 1983, inherited this country property in 1989, moved up here in 1991 and sold the Houston house owner-financed for retirement income (instead of building a fancy new house like my wife wanted to do - just to show-off!). This old wooden farm house is all we need.

I was a self-employed painting contractor and, not surprisingly for a painter in Texas, I speak fluent spanish LOL. There's no reason for anyone to ever be unemployed - there's work out there for everyone if you are willing to do dirty work and do it cheap! Those "unemployed" people on the public dole are just too proud at best and downright lazy at worst! The mexican boys here never miss a day's work because they weren't raised in a nanny/welfare state. They'll do any work they have to for any pay - as I did when times were tough.

22°F here this morning, need I say more?

Does a double layered hoop house really offer that much more of an advantage?

Don't you guys have some gardening to do?

It was 21 here yesterday, and my single layered 26X96 high tunnel with 600 tomato plants are growing great, not one (Maybe One) succumbed. I do use zip houses inside the high tunnel, and when really cold, cover the top of the zip houses with 100 ft long 3"ft wide plastic. I have had it get down to 18 without losing any, but only when protected with low tunnels (zip house) in the last six years up here in Montana.

I think low tunnels would offer more protection than a double layer of covering. The plants are also planted  in black plastic mulch in the high tunnel.

Good luck,

Greg

For Greg, I wish I could get one of those high tunnels.  Yours is exactly the size I would like but they run about $6K now.  Have to save my pennies.  I could always have the govt get me one for free but I have this funny thing about earning what I get.  Maybe if we gave less to farmers on silly things like this high tunnel program maybe we could better finance the research areas that benefit ALL farmers.
