What are you looking forward to in 2012? Are there any new crops, products, production techniques, etc., you are planning on trying out on your farm?

It will be on a small scale this first year to see how it goes. We have a road side stand here in north central Colorado. I would like to get tomatoes earlier if I can.
Permalink Reply by Paul Rusnak on January 27, 2012 at 2:24pm Hoop houses/high tunnels certainly are a hot topic, especially here in Florida, Russell. Sounds like a good way to get a jump on the market.
Permalink Reply by Russell Meeker on January 27, 2012 at 7:17pm We are going to start out small. Maybe put 100 plants under hoop house. If all goes well we will do more.
Permalink Reply by Richard Freeman on February 3, 2012 at 10:53pm Last year we tried small scale hydroponic lettuce. I will be expanding that this year and going organic to go along with our other greenhouse vegetables.
We have used high tunnels in Montana for 7 years, and they pay for themselves in the first year, with just the tomatoes alone. We are earlier tham anyone except greenhouse hydroponics, and the taste is just as the in ground grown tomatoes, because that is what they are. So Russell, go for it. We also throw other odds and ends in the tunnells, but for us, a thousand tomatoes in the tunnells provide a very good return on investment.
