Weeds Giving Growers Fits

I hear in South Florida growers are fighting Parthenium hysterophorus and having difficulty controlling the weed. And, of course, it is an invasive pest, which is nothing new in Florida. Any…Continue

The news wires and cable networks have blown up with coverage over FDA’s action regarding tests for a fungicide in juice from Brazil. The fungicide is not approved for use on citrus in the U.S.  Some…Continue

New Free Trade Agreements

Recently, three free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama, and South America were passed by Congress. Do you believe these agreements will be a net plus or negative for U.S. growers?

Brazilian Orange Juice Media Coverage

The news wires and cable networks have blown up with coverage over FDA’s action regarding tests for a fungicide in juice from Brazil. The fungicide is not approved for use on citrus in the U.S.  Some of the news coverage I've seen gives the impression that all OJ is impacted and doesn’t do enough, in my opinion, to state that this juice is safe for consumption despite the detection of the fungicide.  It can be argued that FDA is following due diligence in testing for the material that is not…See More

H2A 3/4 Rule

I've recently heard of a number of large fines to people using the H2A program and failing to notify the Department of Labor when a local person leaves the job.  Here is a description of how the fine works from Dan Bremer who works with growers on labor: There is a requirement that an H2A employer notify the US Department of Labor and the US Department of Homeland Security within 48 hours of anyone who abandons the job or is terminated.  The US Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division, has…See More

E-Verify Requirements In State Legislation

In Florida, HB 7089 and SB 2040 are in consideration and awaiting votes. Both would require all employers, including agriculture, to use the federal E-Verify system to check employees' status. Ag groups in the state strongly oppose the bill, saying it would make it very difficult to gain the needed workers to harvest crops.

For growers here in PC dependent on labor, how would an E-Verify requirement impact your operations?
