Is anyone else here royally fed up with the Federal Government?  I can't tell you how angry I am that they think they have the right to tell me what my children can and can not do on my farm?  Who…Continue

Plug Trays - Are they all crap?

I have been searching for good, solid plug trays for the last few years.  Each year I wind up putting up with very flimsy single use trays that are NOT easy to move from the greenhouse to the field…Continue

Feds attack farm kids and families

Is anyone else here royally fed up with the Federal Government?  I can't tell you how angry I am that they think they have the right to tell me what my children can and can not do on my farm?  Who the Hell do they think they are? My boys 11 and 10 this year, helped me get 6000 strawberries planted, 600 asparagus, 600 raspberries and 40 grape vines planted.  This required them drive a John Deer Gator, ride on a transplanter, etc.  Are they going to now tell me that they can NOT do this. This…See More

Greenhouse Venting Requirements

I am in the process of building my first 16x24 for starting veggies for the summer.  I am putting up a quonset style greenhouse with double 6 mil poly.I framed the endwalls and put a 20" exhaust fan from J&D Mfg (VES20C) on the west end and two 16" shutter vents on the east end (VRSG16A-C).  The fan is rated for 4790 CFM at .05 Static pressure.  My calculations 16x24x8 (8 feet high) tell me I should need 3072 CFM to turn the air over once per minute.  I figure that static pressure will be…See More

The sweet corn varities you are using are out ot date. I use almost all the extra tender varities.   The earliest one is 270a a 70 day maturity

The varities you use are way out of date. In 1999 the first one was an extra tender 276a which was limited to a few select growers. In 2000 Stokes Seed Company flew a new extra tender variety from Florida to the Great Lakes Expo at Grand Rapids,MI in January for all to taste. This was labeled gourmet 277a. This corn blew me away.  This still sets the standard today. The sales of 277a jumped my sales of sweetcorn big time. 274a wasn,t available until 2001 from my recollection.  I know foresure that 274a has not been out 15 years from what the other grower said. It is almost equal to 277a but there seems to have a butter flavour built in the variety.  277a has husk coverage problems causing bird damage at times and a smaller ear than 274a but 274a has a rust problem especially if planted too late in the season.  270a is the earliest extra tender at 70 day maturity. 274a is a 74 day and 277a is a 77 day maturity.  There are many more bicolor extra tender varities such as 2170, 2171, Fantastic, Sweet Surprise, Stellar, Awesome, 2573,2673,Optimun,Multiglow 7112R,Multiglow7602MR, and a new experimental one called Multiglow 4160. These are not all of the bicolor extra tenders but check them out in your seed catalogues. Good luck.
